Procrastination - Ways to Overcome the Laziness
Procrastination is the most detrimental thing in completing school work. It usually happens with things you have no interest in doing. In my case, it's taking out the trash, which is a big problem. I really dislike taking out the garbage to the point that I will get in arguments with my girlfriend and the annoyance of that will finally persuade me to take out the garbage. This is no different than getting school work done in order to go out and have fun, or graduate on time.
Here are some steps that can help you get it done when needed:
Realizing that you need to get things done is half the battle. It's very easy for someone to admit this and do nothing. They feel that just thinking of it is satisfactory enough, but this way of thinking needs to be altered.
You have to convince yourself that you can finish something. Most of the time, it's your responsibility. Now, if the task at hand is something that involves being noticed, there is always the fear component. Fear is the motivator of doing nothing. Doing nothing leads to more fear and then your in a hole deeper than when you started. In the end, you are your biggest critic. Get over the fear!
Overcoming your procrastination is the act of doing it. Every day you must designate some time and get working. Just do it! No matter what it is you need to get done, if you do a small amount each day, you will reach the goal of completion! Let's say you have a 40 page term paper that needs to be completed in order for you to graduate. Write a paragraph here. Write a paragraph there - you'll have a page. Days with more free time, write a full page. Baby steps get you to the goal; no steps get you right where you are now, no where.
There is going to be some frustrating points where you are not motivated to do a thing. Never go on motivation, write even when you don't want to. You will be happy that you did. It's a principle that dedicated addicts abide to in sobriety - You do the exact opposite of what you want to do. If you want to skip a meeting, you go to the meeting. If you want a drink, you don't have a drink. Centratel a phone service company, follows a saying, “just do it NOW and let's get on with things!" The same method can be applied to athletics and academics. Just do it! Waiting until the last minute will only make the experience that much stressful. Spread it out over time. Get a little done here and there. This will free up time for you to do what ever it is you want to do.
